Elder’s Letter

So the Football World Cup is over… after all the hype and expectation we are able to reflect
on the impact it had. As a keen football fan I was expecting to see the best players in the
world give breath taking performances whilst providing a procession of fantastically
exciting games, after all this was going to be the “biggest sporting show on earth.” Did it
live up to my anticipation? Well there was lots of it! Like having an “all you can eat buffet”
that went on for a month but what about the quality? Generally the star players didn’t
perform, there were a few good games but many dull ones and they used a new type of
football that most players couldn’t control. So on the pitch it wasn’t the best but what about
off the pitch? This was the first football World Cup to be held in Africa, it has to be said it
did deliver, it was well organised and well attended and South Africa gave a good account
of itself on the world stage. The next big world sporting event will be The Olympic Games
from London in 2012, we know about the preparation and the cost but will it deliver? As
with South Africa there will be a question, what will be the legacy? Will there be an
ongoing benefit from it? Jesus’ ministry was spread by word of mouth. There were times
when He preached and did miracles in front of large crowds and at other times when He
preached and did miracles behind closed doors. The three year ministry ended in crucifixion
followed by resurrection. This is a legacy that is of benefit to all and will last forever.

Have a great summer!

Nigel

The London Night Hike

The London Night Hike is an annual 20-mile walk through late night London which raises
vital funds for the network of Maggie’s Centres around the UK. Thanks to the
continued partnership with Open House, the London Night Hike 20 offers all hikers
exclusive access to some of London’s iconic buildings. This year Guildhall, Channel 4, the
Royal Geographical Society, the Royal Institute of Architects (RIBA) and
Horseguards are already signed up and the 20-mile route wouldn’t be complete without a
visit to London Maggie’s Centre. Every penny you donate will go towards changing the lives of people affected by cancer.
Maggie’s Centres are almost entirely run by voluntary funding. The money raised
will help Maggie’s to reach the goal of opening six new Cancer Caring Centres across the UK by 2012 and support the running costs of their existing centres.

Linda Harris with a team of friends from her work will be completing the hike on September 17th and their target is to raise£1200. To donate access the Just Giving website

on http:// www.justgiving.com/ London-Night-Hike- Team-Adventure,

or click on the link in the church website Other Organisations page

or hand any donations to Sheena or Terry and they will donate it for you.

Turn  on the Tap 2010
Well, our second walk for water is over and, how blessed are we?    We just had fellowship,
fun and a fitness boost and the result will be life changing for sure!  Sounds like the stuff
miracles are made of doesn’t it! We started  with a prayer and some ‘ground rules’ then off
we went.  Families and friends walked and chatted enjoying the balmy conditions.  We sipped
water en route being mindful of how privileged we are to do so.  The odd passer by stopped
and made donations and some had a little chat too.  Little Henry took a much needed rest in
his pushchair whilst Bethan and Becca jogged for fitness.  Our more senior friends were
determined to do their best and, ‘boy’ they did us proud! A well earned rest followed in the
form of a little picnic under the shade of a big old tree (you know, the ones you get conkers
from!)  Once a few late comers had finished their walk, it was time for home  (...or in my
case, afternoon shift in good ol’ M&S).  You know, there are times when we can ‘shine’, both
as individuals and as a church and show how God works within us.  I think we did it that day.
The results will be far reaching and it brings a smile to my face knowing the difference we
have helped to make to the lives of others.  Thanks to everyone who was a part of ‘Turn on
the Tap 2010’ whether you walked, donated, helped or prayed.  We worked together as one
church and I thank God that we are so blessed.
Jane.

What a wonderful surprise to receive such a generous donation from my friends at
Fairwater Presbyterian Church. Please pass on my sincere thanks to everyone who helped
raise the money. As I write this I am preparing for the next trip to Bulgaria with a team of
students from Okehampton College. We will be running a week of activities for approx 80
children aged 3-18 in an orphanage in Barzitsa (Eastern Bulgaria). While there I also hope
to get everything ready for the next stage of the essential repairs required to keep the
Provadia orphanage open. If I’m successful the next trip will be in September when a team
of builders and labourers will go to repair the roof. Working in Bulgaria presents its own
set of unique challenges as power and money are the driving forces there whilst we are
driven by love and compassion. However, God never ceases to amaze me as He continually
achieves things which are impossible in human terms. I am always conscious of the
privilege of being the one called to go and work with the children and am equally conscious
that it only because of the generosity of people who give financially that the work is
possible. However, the singularly most important group are those who pray so I would ask
everyone at Fairwater Presbyterian Church to uphold the project and in particular, the
children with whom we work, in their daily prayers. So thanks to everyone who gives and
prays without you we could not continue but most of all, thanks to our wonderful God who
masterminds the whole project.

Yours faithfully

Andrew Morgan
